Mental Development and Education (Classic Reprint) by M. V. O'shea Pdf

Excerpt from Mental Development and Education In writing this volume the author has had constantly in mind the interests and needs of teachers in service and also persons who are preparing to teach. Consequently those aspects only of mental development and of education which directly concern those who train the young have received attention; all strictly technical and speculative discussion has been avoided. No attempt has been made to treat comprehensively the psychology of childhood and youth or educational values and methods. Two questions have guided the discussion throughout; - first, How does the individual normally respond at different periods in his development to the typical situations, physical, intellectual, aesthetic and social, in which he is placed; and second, How can he best appropriate the materials and benefits of education so that he can utilize them to greatest advantage in daily life? The point of view is that afforded by present-day biological psychology. For those who may not at first glance see just what this point of view is, it may be said that one who regards human nature from the standpoint of biological psychology seeks to explain the behavior of a child or a youth on the basis of natural laws governing the development of his body, his intellect and his character. It is seen that the individual is at birth equipped with tendencies which represent some of the activities which have proved of service in the life of his ancestors, and these tendencies are manifested in varying degrees and forms in the course of development from birth to maturity. Social Development and Education (Classic Reprint) by M. V. O'shea Pdf

Excerpt from Social Development and Education In Part I of this volume, I have attempted first to describe the typical attitudes which the child tends to assume toward the persons with whom he comes into contact in the ordinary situations of daily life, and to explain these attitudes in view of certain fundamental principles of mental development. To this end I have presented the results of observations of children's reactions under a variety of social conditions, the aim being to detect if possible the "natural" or impulsive tendencies in their responses. Then, in the second place, it has been my purpose to trace the changes in the child's adjustments to people which seem normally to occur in the process of development. This has required a mode of procedure in which the individual is followed from infancy to maturity along the several routes which lead to efficiency in social adaptation; and the ever-present question has been whether the child would on his own initiative follow these routes, or whether if left to himself he would stop on the way, or turn off in other directions. It has been my constant effort to note the actual tendencies of the child at different stages in his evolution, without regard to prevailing popular or theoretical conceptions of what he is or what he ought to be or to do. I have undertaken in Part II certain phases of the difficult and interminable task of outlining a plan and method of education designed to make the individual socially efficient. My point of view might properly, I think, be said to be that of the naturalist rather than that of the logician or philosopher, or even the moralist or idealist. Social Principles of Education (Classic Reprint) by George Herbert Betts Pdf

Excerpt from Social Principles of Education The problem of philosophy is to bring to light new and more profound meanings. Philosophy seeks to find in the world as a whole a broader and richer significance through discovering the ulti mate and vital relations which exist among its parts. It tries so to organize and unify experience that it may possess the richest and fullest reality pos sible. Philosophy attempts to fit part to part in the great mosaic of creation, confident that the meaning of the whole and of each part will appear when the pattern is complete. Education and Social Progress (Classic Reprint) by Ira W. Howerth Pdf

Excerpt from Education and Social Progress Holding in mind, then, the conception of a developing social group, we may describe the social evolutionary process which results primarily in the education of the social group, in the same manner that was employed in outlining the development of the individual. The process of group development, like that of individual development, may be divided into natural or genetic, and artificial or telic evolution. The natural evolution of the social group, so far as it is progressive, has resulted from the operation of external causes, or from the activities of the members of the group undirected towards a social end. Natural social evolution is a resultant of the reactions of the group upon its environment, and the activities of its members directed towards the satisfaction of their desires without thought of the effect of these activities upon social develop ment. It is wholly unintended. Looking back at the his torical development of society, for instance, we can see that social progress has sometimes been achieved without its being aimed at by anybody. This phase of the development of a social group corresponds exactly to the natural development of the biological organism. It is the education which Nature gives to the social group thru its unconscious experience with its obj ective'and subjective environment. Education for Social Efficiency by Irving King Pdf

Excerpt from Education for Social Efficiency: A Study in the Social, Relations of Education In writing the pages which follow the author has had in mind not so much the interests of the educational specialist as the practical needs of busy teachers and parents. He has attempted to present, in simple language, and largely through the medium of illustration, a social view of education which is coming more and more to prevail. He has attempted to show, concretely, various ways in which the average teacher and parent may contribute something toward the realization of the ideal of social efficiency as the goal of our educational enterprise. Let not the reader lose his perspective as he finds the social point of view constantly dwelt upon in these pages. In emphasizing the social meanings the author has not been unmindful that education has other important meanings and values. These are, in a sense, subordinate to the social values, and, in any case, they have received their share of attention elsewhere. It seems legitimate, therefore, to pass them by in this discussion. The Philosophy of Education by Herman Harrell Horne Pdf

Excerpt from The Philosophy of Education: Being the Foundations of Education in the Related Natural and Mental Sciences "What, then, is education, and how are we to educate? As yet there is no agreement on these points. Men are not agreed as to what the young should learn, with a view either to perfect training or the best life. It is not agreed whether education is to aim at the development of the intellect or of the moral character. Nor is it clear whether, in order to bring about these results, we are to train in what leads to virtue, in what is useful for ordinary life, or in abstract science." These are modern words from Aristotle. They indicate for us the Babel of voices in the educational world. The times call not for another voice, louder than the others, but, if it can be had, for a quiet vision of the compelling truth. I have simply attempted in the following pages to help remove the veil from the face of educational truth, in the light of which, perhaps, some confused teacher may find the way to his appointed task. I have no war to wage, not even a battle to fight, wherewith to feast the eye of workers hungry for the bread of educational life. World Brain (Classic Reprint) by H. G. Wells Pdf

Excerpt from World Brain In a world of fluctuating and generally expanding communities and ranges of reaction, the science of constructive sociology seeks to detect and give defini tion to the trends and requirements of man's social circumstances and to study the possibilities and meth ods of adapting the natural man to them. It is the science of current adaptations. It has therefore two reciprocal aspects; on the one hand it has to deal with social organizations, laws, customs and regulations, which may either be actually operative or merely projected and potential, and on the other hand it has to examine the education these real or proposed social organizations require. These two aspects are inseparable, they need to fit like hand and glove. Plans and theories of social structure and plans and theories of education are the outer and inner aspects of the same thing. Each necessitates the other. Every social order must have its own distinctive process of education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Church, State and Education (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Barker Pdf

Excerpt from Church, State and Education At the end of one of my latest books (principles of Social and Political Theory, published in 1951) I find myself still confronted by the same tension, and arguing in much the same sense as I had argued long ago in 1914. And therefore, on the whole, I see no real change in my views; I see only a different emphasis, varying from time to time, now on this and now on that side of the permanent tension between the authority of the State and the voluntary play of freely formed and freely acting groups or societies. It is impos sible not to experience and confess some change of mind and alteration of view with the change of circumstance and the alter ation of contingencies. But I do not think that this means any real or substantial change of View. The tension remains: the circum stances surrounding it change: the barometer of the reflective mind just registers the consequential change in the character and balance of the tension which must always continue to exist.
