Gathering Hopewell by Christopher Carr,D. Troy Case Pdf

Among the most socially and personally vocal archaeological remains on the North American continent are the massive and often complexly designed earthen architecture of Hopewellian peoples of two thousand years ago, their elaborately embellished works of art made of glistening metals and stones from faraway places, and their highly formalized mortuaries. In this book, twenty-one researchers in interwoven efforts immerse themselves and the reader in this vibrant archaeological record in order to richly reconstruct the societies, rituals, and ritual interactions of Hopewellian peoples. By finding the faces, actions, and motivations of Hopewellian peoples as individuals who constructed knowable social roles, the authors explore, in a personalized and locally contextualized manner, the details of Hopewellian life: leadership, its sacred and secular power bases, recruitment, and formalization over time; systems of social ranking and prestige; animal-totemic clan organization, kinship structures, and sodalities; gender roles, prestige, work load, and health; community organization in its tri-scalar residential, symbolic, and demographic forms; intercommunity alliances and changes in their strategies and expanses over time; and interregional travels for power questing, pilgrimage, healing, tutelage, and acquiring ritual knowledge. This book is useful to scholars, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates interested in the workings and development of social complexity at local and interregional scales, recent theoretical developments in the anthropology of the topics listed above, the prehistory of eastern North America, its history of intellectual development, and Native American ritual, symbolism, and belief.

Souls in the Great Machine by Sean McMullen Pdf

Souls in the Great Machine is the first volume of Sean McMullen's brilliant future history of the world of Greatwinter. The great Calculor of Libris was forced to watch as Overmayor Zarvora had four of its components lined up against a wall and shot for negligence. Thereafter, its calculations were free from errors, and that was just as well-for only this strangest of calculating machines and its two thousand enslaved components could save the world from a new ice age. And all the while a faint mirrorsun hangs in the night sky, warning of the cold to come. In Sean McMullen's glittering, dynamic, and exotic world two millennia from now, there is no more electricity, wind engines are leading-edge technology, librarians fight duels to settle disputes, steam power is banned by every major religion, and a mysterious siren "Call" lures people to their death. Nevertheless, the brilliant and ruthless Zarvora intends to start a war in space against inconceivably ancient nuclear battle stations. Unbeknownst to Zarvora, however, the greatest threat to humanity is neither a machine nor a force but her demented and implacable enemy Lemorel, who has resurrected an obscene and evil concept from the distant past: Total War. The Holy Alliance by Isaac Nakhimovsky Pdf

A major new account of the post-Napoleonic Holy Alliance and the promise it held for liberals The Holy Alliance is now most familiar as a label for conspiratorial reaction. In this book, Isaac Nakhimovsky reveals the Enlightenment origins of this post-Napoleonic initiative, explaining why it was embraced at first by many contemporary liberals as the birth of a federal Europe and the dawning of a peaceful and prosperous age of global progress. Examining how the Holy Alliance could figure as both an idea of progress and an emblem of reaction, Nakhimovsky offers a novel vantage point on the history of federative alternatives to the nation state. The result is a clearer understanding of the recurring appeal of such alternatives—and the reasons why the politics of federation has also come to be associated with entrenched resistance to liberalism’s emancipatory aims. Nakhimovsky connects the history of the Holy Alliance with the better-known transatlantic history of eighteenth-century constitutionalism and nineteenth-century efforts to abolish slavery and war. He also shows how the Holy Alliance was integrated into a variety of liberal narratives of progress. From the League of Nations to the Cold War, historical analogies to the Holy Alliance continued to be drawn throughout the twentieth century, and Nakhimovsky maps how some of the fundamental political problems raised by the Holy Alliance have continued to reappear in new forms under new circumstances. Time will tell whether current assessments of contemporary federal systems seem less implausible to future generations than initial liberal expectations of the Holy Alliance do to us today.

Assaulted Souls II by William Blackwell Pdf

Clinging to life, two post-apocalyptic disaster survivors are rescued from a chaotic and violent struggle on the east coast of Canada. Believing they're safe, they are precipitously quarantined on a ship by the government, watched 24/7, and poked and prodded like laboratory animals. Nathan King is assured by chemical biologist Stan Imes that the injections are merely anti-radiation medication, and the quarantine is necessary to insure they aren't infected by a rage virus that has turned much of the population into frenzied, frothing killer zombies. But survivor Velvet Jones doesn't buy it. After learning of a vicious murder, she tries to convince Nathan they are being genetically modified into the perfect super soldiers, to fight the battles of the demented megalomaniacs in power. Nathan isn't so sure. But he soon realizes his mind is not his own anymore after violent impulses surface, propelling him to want to murder Velvet, perhaps his only ally in this living hell. Soon he learns they aren't alone. Other test subjects, some whose blood types spawn uncontrollable violent urges, are kept in a special facility and subjected to all manner of torturous behavior control techniques. The so-called deviants are ultimately executed if their adverse behaviors can't be rectified. Suffering violent and murderous side effects, Nathan and Velvet must find some sanity in a world gone mad, and fight the most horrific battle of their lives.
