Intelligent Systems for Engineering by Ram D. Sriram Pdf

When men of knowledge impart this knowledge, I do not mean they will convince your reason. I mean they will awaken in you the faith that it is so. - Sri Krishna, Bhagavadgita BACKGROUND The use of computers has led to significant productivity increases in the en gineering industry. Most ofthe computer-aided engineering applications were . restricted to algorithmic computations, such as finite element programs and circuit analysis programs. However, a number ofproblems encountered in en gineering are not amenable to purely algorithmic solutions. These problems are often ill-structured; the term ill-structured problems is used here to de note problems that do not have a clearly defined algorithmic solution. An experienced engineer deals with these ill-structured problems using his/her judgment and experience. The knowledge-based systems (KBS) technology, which emerged out of research in artificial intelligence (AI), offers a method ologyto solve these ill-structuredengineering problems. The emergenceofthe KBS technology can be viewed as the knowledge revolution: other important events that led to increased productivity are the industrial revolution (17th century); the invention of the transistor and associated developments (first half of the 20th century); and the world-wide web (towards the end of the 20th century). Kurzweil, in a lecture at M. LT on December 3, 1987, linked the progress of automation to two industrial revolutions: the first industrial PREFACE xxxii revolution leveraged our physical capabilities, whereas the second industrial revolution - the knowledge revolution - is expected leverage oUr mental ca pabilities.

Artificial Intelligence by J R Ennals Pdf

Artificial Intelligence: State of the Art Report is a two-part report consisting of the invited papers and the analysis. The editor first gives an introduction to the invited papers before presenting each paper and the analysis, and then concludes with the list of references related to the study. The invited papers explore the various aspects of artificial intelligence. The analysis part assesses the major advances in artificial intelligence and provides a balanced analysis of the state of the art in this field. The Bibliography compiles the most important published material on the subject of artificial intelligence and includes all the materials cited in the invited paper and analysis references.

Topics in Expert System Design by C. Tasso,G. Guida Pdf

Expert Systems are so far the most promising achievement of artificial intelligence research. Decision making, planning, design, control, supervision and diagnosis are areas where they are showing great potential. However, the establishment of expert system technology and its actual industrial impact are still limited by the lack of a sound, general and reliable design and construction methodology. This book has a dual purpose: to offer concrete guidelines and tools to the designers of expert systems, and to promote basic and applied research on methodologies and tools. It is a coordinated collection of papers from researchers in the USA and Europe, examining important and emerging topics, methodological advances and practical experience obtained in specific applications. Each paper includes a survey introduction, and a comprehensive bibliography is provided.

Intelligent Systems Design by Larry Bielawski,Robert Lewand Pdf

In this book, we focus on intelligent systems that are based on the integration of expert systems, hypermedia, and data-base technologies, for together they offer a rich environment for creating computer applications that can increase productivity enormously and act as intelligent assistants. Though hypermedia and expert systems technologies date back thirty or more years as independent technologies, it has only been in the last three years that their paths have fully converged, offering system developers a flexible environment that takes advantage of existing information and data. The combination of hypermedia and expert systems is quite attractive as it leads to overall increases in productivity.

Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, Towards an Integration by L.N. Kanal,E.S. Gelsema Pdf

This volume brings together the results of research into the methodology and applications of pattern recognition, with particular emphasis given to the incorporation of artificial intelligence methodologies into pattern recognition systems. The first part of this volume covers image analysis and processing software, systems and algorithms. Pattern analysis and classifier design are dealt with in part two, while the last part deals with model based and expert systems, including uncertainty calculus methods in pattern analysis and object recognition. A number of specific application areas are considered, including such diverse topics as fingerprinting, astronomy, molecular biology and pathology.

Industrial Applications of Knowledge-based Diagnosis by Giovanni Guida,A. Stefanini Pdf

Diagnosis of industrial systems and processes is a crucial issue in industrial engineering. Over the last two decades, considerable investments have been made on diagnostic techniques and significant advances have been obtained in many industrial sectors, including discrete manufacturing as well as continuous production. While the application of knowledge-based system technology to diagnostic tasks has been largely investigated in the last decade and a lot of significant experience has been accumulated, its suitability to large scale industrial applications is still to some degree an open issue. Knowledge-based diagnosis has often been oriented towards advanced research issues rather than near-term applications. The aim of this book is to provide a broad overview on the application of knowledge-based diagnostic systems in industrial environments. The volume will prove an indispensable reference source for all those interested in knowledge-based systems which can explicitly represent knowledge on the task domain. The chapters cover a variety of general problem-solving methods, reviewing problems which involve non-deterministic reasoning about empirical, unstructured, uncertain, incomplete, or qualitative knowledge. The choice of topics emphasise that integration of knowledge-based diagnosis with existing systems and working practices is still a challenging issue.
