What to Eat and How to Prepare It (Classic Reprint) by Elizabeth A. Monaghan Pdf

Excerpt from What to Eat and How to Prepare It This little book places such knowledge within the easy grasp of every reader with a clearness which is simplicity itself. Miss Monaghan has given not only a clear vision on the subject of food and what is food; she has taught how to select, combine and prepare it. She has told not only what to do but with equal deftness how to do it. Her book should be an inspiration to every housewife. It would be well if every mother in the land could have a copy and live thereby. Forty years ago there was less imperative need for such knowledge. Natural foods were easier to ob tain. We thrived on these natural foods without knowing why, nor needing to know. Throughout a long and very active practice I have seen and noted the results of both the old and new methods of living. Malnutrition with its consequent evils has kept steady pace with the refinement of foods. Today with our splendid knowledge of sanitation and the prevention of contagious diseases (knowl edge which was not ours in the early days), we are threatened with an evil which is more deadly because it is stealthy. It does not strike us down and rouse us to fight it. It robs us a little at a time, leaving us easy prey to every ill. Thus we lose sight of the cause. Malnutrition has many phases. Food refinement began innocently enough. It has been carried too far. Food deficiency disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. What to Eat, How to Serve It (Classic Reprint) by Christine Terhune Herrick Pdf

Excerpt from What to Eat, How to Serve It Only in the houses of the wealthy, or of those possessed of exceptionally large dwell ings, is there found a breakfast-room other than that in which are eaten all the meals of the family. English mansions frequently possess both a family and a state dining room, and the same custom prevails in some of the private palaces of our own million aires; but in the average American home one room must do duty for every repast, whether Simple or superb; and in our large cities this apartment is too likely, alas! To be Situated in the basement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office (Classic Reprint) by A. G. Walpole Sayer Pdf

Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea by O. H. Peters Pdf

Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
