Youth Ministry in Papua New Guinea by Danijela Schubert Pdf

Papua New Guinea is experiencing changes that grow in significance and accelerate in pace. Although the majority of its population are still subsistence farmers, the postmodern world is fast making an impact. That means that, at the same time, they are strongly influenced by firmly ingrained tradition where animism is binding and a pervasive element as well as Western media with its consumerism and worldview. The most impacted are youth who are caught between the traditional and postmodern culture. In a country that is Christian by constitution, pastors are looked upon with high esteem. They need to find a way to bridge the gap, to make sense of the world youth are living in, and find a meaningful way forward. Although this book is aimed at pastors and youth workers in PNG, other sectors can benefit from the research--politicians, educators, health workers, clergy--especially if they are coming from a different culture, be that from PNG or another country.

Conflict and Resource Development in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea by Nicole Haley,Ron May Pdf

The Southern Highlands is one of Papua New Guinea's most resource-rich provinces, but for a number of years the province has been riven by conflict. Longstanding inter-group rivalries, briefly set aside during the colonial period, have been compounded by competition for the benefits provided by the modern state and by fighting over the distribution of returns from the several big mining and petroleum projects located within the province or impinging upon it. Deaths from the various conflicts over the past decade number in the hundreds. As a result of inter-group fighting, criminal activity and vandalism, a number of businesses have withdrawn from the province. Roadblocks and ambushes have made travel dangerous in many parts and expatriate missionaries and aid workers have left. Many public servants have abandoned their posts with the result that state services are not provided. Corruption is rife. Police are often reluctant to act because they are outnumbered and outgunned. This volume brings together a number of authors with deep experience of the Southern Highlands to examine the underlying dynamics of resource development and conflict in the province. Its primary purpose is to provide some background to recent events, but the authors also explore possible approaches to limiting the human and economic costs of the ongoing conflict and breakdown of governance.

Law and Order in a Weak State by Sinclair Dinnen Pdf

Twenty-five years after independence, Papua New Guinea is beset by social, economic, and political problems: poverty and inequality, a young and expanding population, a stagnant economy, corruption, and rising crime. The state has not only failed to contain these problems but has become progressively implicated in their persistence. Escalating levels of violence and lawlessness are seen by many as the most serious challenge facing the young country. This book examines these problems of order in light of Papua New Guinea’s remarkable social diversity and the impact of rapid and pervasive processes of change. Three original and strategic case studies involving urban gangs, mining security, and election violence form the core of the work. Each case study looks at particular forms of conflict, and the responses these engender, across different socioeconomic contexts and geographic locations. Empirical data are analyzed through a common framework that employs material, cultural and institutional perspectives, allowing readers to view the three cases through different theoretical prisms, identify linkages between them, and, in the process, build a larger picture of the post-colonial social order. Law and Order in a Weak State charts not only the problems of crime and lawlessness in Papua New Guinea but also the possibilities for constructive, pragmatic solutions. It will be of great interest to scholars, aid and policy officials, and others concerned with understanding the social complexities and challenges of contemporary Papua New Guinea.

Feeding Your Forgotten Soul by Paul Borthwick Pdf

Spiritual growth and health. So essential . . . so valuable . . . and so difficult to maintain. Why? That's the question every burned-out or morally fallen youth worker has asked. And all of us in youth ministry wrestle with the seemingly endless battle against spiritual fatigue. Fortunately, veteran youth and missions minister Paul Borthwick gives us a fresh understanding of the battle and a game plan for developing and maintaining a dynamic spiritual life in Feeding Your Forgotten Soul. Borthwick takes a frank look at the hurdles to spiritual growth, what it takes for us to resume the path to spiritual health, and offers clear guidelines on how to keep our lives firmly on the spiritual balance beam. He addresses topics like -- Understanding how the drive for success affects our spiritual integrity - Confronting and surviving the battle with sexual temptation - Building spiritual discipline back into our lives - Learning to forgive ourselves -- Feeding Your Forgotten Soul is clear without being simplistic. Borthwick avoids the quick-fix mentality, instead pointing us to a long-term path to solid spiritual development. And he doesn't' speak from a pedestal. He is brutally honest about his own struggles with loss of perspective, spiritual fatigue, and temptation. You'll find Feeding Your Forgotten Soul to be as sensitive as it is challenging, as compassionate as it is honest. And you'll come away with a new motivation for strengthening your personal walk with God.

Script Development by Craig Batty,Stayci Taylor Pdf

This book offers the first international look at how script development is theorised and practiced. Drawing on interviews, case studies, discourse analysis, creative practices and industry experiences, it brings together scholars and practitioners from around the world to offer critical insights into this core, but often hidden, aspect of screenwriting and screen production. Chapters speculate and reflect upon how creative, commercial and social practices – in which ideas, emotions, people and personalities combine, cohere and clash – are shaped by the practicalities, policies and rapid movements of the screen industry. Comprising two parts, the book first looks ‘into’ script development from a theoretical perspective, and second looks ‘out from’ the practice to form practitioner-led perspectives of script development. With a rising interest in screenwriting and production studies, and an increased appetite for practice-based research, the book offers a timely mapping of the terrain of script development, providing rich foundations for both study and practice.

Pacific Answers to Western Hegemony by Jürg Wassmann Pdf

The destruction of local identity through the relentless encroachment of a 'McDonald-ized' cultural imperialism is a global phenomenon. Yet the reactions of Pacific peoples to this Western hegemony are diverse and encourage the creation of independent cultural identities through sports and games, political mediations, tourism, media and filmmaking, and the struggles for land rights and titles, particularly in Australia. This book, based on extensive fieldwork, addresses a subject of great immediacy to peoples of the Pacific Island nations. It fills an important gap in existing ethnographic literature on the region and confidently navigates what had previously been considered uncharted, even unchartable, waters -- that wide sea between the classic ethnography of Oceania and contemporary anthropology's theoretical concerns with global relations and transnational cultures. Its breadth, rigour, and timely contribution to post-colonial politics in Oceania are certain to ensure that this book will provide an enduring contribution to the field.
