Tools, Not Rules by Tommy Thomason,Geoff Ward Pdf

If you want to start an argument in a teachers' lounge, bring up the topic of how best to teach grammar. There is a wide spectrum of opinion. Traditionalists claim that we must explicitly teach grammar. Students drill the basics and diagram sentences. Sometimes their study and drills take the place of writing, but these teachers claim that good writing demands good grammar. At the opposite end of the spectrum are teachers who claim that the best way to learn grammar is to write, thereby being forced to use grammar in writing and editing. They reason that students will learn grammar in the context of actually using it, without all the drills and worksheets. They trust the writing process to instill an appreciation for grammar, instead of actually teaching it. Teachers on the write-to-learn-grammar side claim that students who are only taught grammar rules might pass tests, but since they didn't learn in the context of writing, they typically don't apply the rules when they write. Grammar traditionalists say students in writing classes never learn grammar at all, because it is not explicitly taught. In Tools, Not Rules, authors Tommy Thomason and Geoff Ward take the middle-ground position that grammar should be taught as part of the writing process. Tommy Thomason is a veteran journalist and university journalism professor at TCU. Geoff Ward is a well-known Australian professor and associate dean from James Cook University in Townsville. Both have written several books and work extensively with American teachers. Publisher's website: http: //www.eloquentbooks.com/ ToolsNotRules-TeachingGrammarInTheWritingClassroom.html

Effective Curriculum for Teaching L2 Writing by Eli Hinkel Pdf

Effective Curriculum for Teaching L2 Writing sets out a clear big picture for curricular thinking about L2 writing pedagogy and offers a step-by-step guide to curriculum design with practical examples and illustrations. Its main purpose is to help pre-service and practicing teachers design courses for teaching academic writing and to do this as efficiently and effectively as possible. Bringing together the what and the how-to with research-based principles, what sets this book apart is its overarching focus on language pedagogy and language building. Part 1 examines curricular foundations in general and focuses on what is socially valued in L2 writing and pedagogy at school and at the college and university level. Part 2 is concerned with the nitty-gritty̶—the daily realities of curricular design and classroom instruction. Part 3 takes a close look at the key pedagogical ingredients of teaching academic L2 writing: vocabulary and collocations, grammar for academic writing, and down-to-earth techniques for helping L2 writers to organize discourse and ideas. The Appendix provides an extensive checklist for developing curricula for a course or several courses in language teaching.

The Absolute Minimum Any Educator Should Know & Teach Students About the Sentence by Carolyn Carter, Ed. D. Pdf

Teachers need an approach to teaching the sentence that provides students with proficiency in sentence elements and clear understanding of how these work together to create types, purposes, and functions of sentences. They, likewise, need an approach that is effective, that results in students mastering the elements essential to their understanding of English language. More than this, though, they need an instructional approach that will build students' background in text features and increase their conscious awareness of text at its most elemental level, the sentence. Following their understanding of the sentence, students can be branched easily to the paragraph and from there to understanding the whole to part nature of text better. Needed: A Whole School Focus On Sentence Basics Why not a whole school focus on sentence basics? Why not get all the teachers on the same page with respect to the sentence and in so doing, get everyone focused on ONE standard for writing sentences? This text provides the approach that can launch an effective writing to learn or writing across the curriculum approach.
