Ion Beam Modification of Solids by Werner Wesch,Elke Wendler Pdf

This book presents the method of ion beam modification of solids in realization, theory and applications in a comprehensive way. It provides a review of the physical basics of ion-solid interaction and on ion-beam induced structural modifications of solids. Ion beams are widely used to modify the physical properties of materials. A complete theory of ion stopping in matter and the calculation of the energy loss due to nuclear and electronic interactions are presented including the effect of ion channeling. To explain structural modifications due to high electronic excitations, different concepts are presented with special emphasis on the thermal spike model. Furthermore, general concepts of damage evolution as a function of ion mass, ion fluence, ion flux and temperature are described in detail and their limits and applicability are discussed. The effect of nuclear and electronic energy loss on structural modifications of solids such as damage formation, phase transitions and amorphization is reviewed for insulators and semiconductors. Finally some selected applications of ion beams are given.

Erosion and Growth of Solids Stimulated by Atom and Ion Beams by G. Kiriakidis,G. Carter,J.L. Whitton Pdf

The members of the organising Committee and their colleagues have, for many years been investigating the evol ution of the fas'cinating surface features which develop during sputtering erosion of solids. Such experimental, theoretical and computational studies have also been carried out in many international laboratories and, as well as much cow~onality and agreement, substantial disagreements were unresolved. In view of the increasing importance of such processes in technological applications such as microlitho graphic etching for the patterning of solid state devices and in fusion technology it was felt opportune to hold a meeting in this area. Furthermore the use of energetic atomic and ion fluxes is also becoming of increasing importance in assisting or modifying the growth of thin films in a number of important industrial processes and it was therefore rational to combine the, study of both erosional and growth processes in a single meeting. These proceedings include 16 invited review and 15 oral or poster presented contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on the "Erosion and Growth of Solids Stimulated by Atom and Ion Beams". The review contributions span the range from the fundamental concepts of ballistic sputtering, and how this influences surface morphology evolution, through processes involving entrapment of incident species to mechanisms involved in'the use of chemically reactive ion species. Further reviews outline the influence of energetic irradiation upon surface growth by atomic deposition whilst others discuss technologkal applications of both areas of growth and erosion.

Electron Beam Modification of Solids by Sergey V. Mjakin,Maxim M. Sychov,Inna V. Vasiljeva Pdf

The effect of electron beam treatment upon various materials (oxides, sulfides, ceramics, polymers) is studied to clarify the general features of chemical reactions involving surface functional groups in correlation with the processing parameters and optimise the potential applications of electron beam technologies. Particularly, pre-treatment with accelerated electrons under the optimal conditions provides: control of the surface functionality (ratios between various types of Lewis and Brensted sites); improvement of the properties of cements using electron beam modification of fillers and aqueous phase; enhancement of ceramic materials strength by their electron beam modification of fillers and aqueous phase; increase of sorbents activity by electron beam activation to form specific adsorption sites; improvement of ZnS based electroluminescent phosphors due to the modification of their components and raw materials; control of the surface properties of polymers such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) affording their compatibility with other materials. The mechanisms responsible for electron beam induced surface chemical transformations in solids depending on electron beam processing parameters and common features of these reactions for different compounds are revealed on the basis of a thorough surface functionality analysis. The considered data are confirmed by theoretical simulations and supported by the overview of the modern equipment for electron beam processing.

This conference consisted of 15 oral sessions, including three plenary papers covering areas of general interest, 22 specialist invited papers and 51 contributed presentations as well as three poster sessions. There were several scientific highlights covering a diverse spectrum of materials and ion beam processing methods. These included a wide range of conventional and novel applications such as: optical displays and opto-electronics, motor vehicle and tooling parts, coatings tailored for desired properties, studies of fundamental defect properties, the production of novel (often buried) compounds, and treating biomedical materials. The study of nanocrystals produced by ion implantation in a range of host matrices, particularly for opto-electronics applications, was one especially new and exciting development. Despite several decades of study, major progress was reported at the conference in understanding defect evolution in semiconductors and the role of defects in transient impurity diffusion. The use of implantation to tune or isolate optical devices and in forming optically active centres and waveguides in semiconductors, polymers and oxide ceramics was a major focus of several presentations at the conference. The formation of hard coatings by ion assisted deposition or direct implantation was also an area which showed much recent progress. Ion beam techniques had also developed apace, particularly those based on plasma immersion ion implantation or alternative techniques for large area surface treatment. Finally, the use of ion beams for the direct treatment of cancerous tissue was a particularly novel and interesting application of ion beams.
