Despite being recognized as the most 'Jewish' Gospel, many argue that Matthew was penned by someone who sought to distance himself from Judaism. Scholars have used diverse approaches for determining the relationship between Matthew and the variegated Judaism of the first century, but few recognize the important piece that the Evangelist's Christology - in particular the shepherd motif - brings to the puzzle of his socio-religious orientation. Wayne Baxter contends that there are distinctive tendencies in the shepherd metaphor's appropriation by non-Christ-believing Jewish and Graeco-Roman authors as well as Christ-believing authors approximately contemporary with Matthew, which reflect distinct patterns of thought. By comparing these uses of the shepherd metaphor Baxter unearths clues about the Evangelist's socio-religious orientation. Baxter is able to use this to determines the metaphor's contribution to the overall theological framework of the Gospel, specifically, its Christology, soteriology, and the Evangelist's view of mission. Moreover, he is able to ascertain Matthew's socio-religious orientation, and thus, and its implications for the debate surrounding the 'parting of the ways' between Judaism and Christianity.

It points out, from Ezekiel’s use of symbolism and shepherd motif, what society stands to suffer and or lose under a bad human leadership structure and bad governance. This plays out in the book’s x-ray of the characteristics of sheep needing a shepherd. Dr. Biwul contends that Ezekiel used symbolic sign-acts to indict both Israel’s bad and imperfect human shepherds as well as the Babylonian exiles as being responsible for their plight for not upholding the norms of Deuteronomic theology. Particularly, he argues forcefully from Ezekiel’s shepherd motif that a major factor responsible for the exile of Israel as a covenant community is the massive failure of its bad and imperfect human shepherds who did not possess the requisite shepherding qualities inherent in Yahweh as chief shepherd of Israel. Biwul therefore draws particular attention to the reality of Ezekiel’s use of the recognition formula when Yahweh acts at last to restore his people. This is rooted in the theological-eschatological motif which would come to its full reality in the anticipated eschatological community when Yahweh would shepherd his people.

God created all people. Within the total of humanity God has a group of people that He considers His own, His chosen people. These chosen few were given a name that defines who they are, and what makes them separate from all other people. That name of course is 'Israel'. "Israel" means 'one who struggles with God'. It's one who wrestles with God's Divine authority, i.e., His commands, laws and promises. And after the internal struggle is over, they surrender their own wills to submit to YHVH's Divine will. The problem is, we are all born with a selfish nature, that is, we are by nature self-centered, self-absorbed and we elevate self to top priority in our lives and we desire to be self-ruled and put self first- we don't want anyone telling us what to do. We by nature don't want to submit to anyone else's authority. However, YHVH God calls on us to humble ourselves and submit to His Divine authority. And our internal struggle must happen in order to do that, we must crucify 'self', i.e., self-love, selfishness, self-centeredness, etc. And that is what Jesus called us to do, in order to be one of God's chosen people; Matthew 16:24, "Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." And Luke adds the word 'Daily'. And when we are able to do that we are true children of Abraham and partake in a covenant relationship with YHVH God, by fulfilling the stipulations of the Covenant, becoming Israel and receiving the promise of eternal life. In this book I will examine the Scriptures to see what it alone says about who is the true Israel. I will draw on many of scriptures from the New and Old Testaments which tell us how we can be true Israel. By the time you are done with this book, the answer you are seeking will be obvious.
