Focus on neuropeptide research 2007 by Rafael Covenãs Rodríguez Pdf

Neuropeptides is one of the disciplines in the field of Neuroscience that has been largely developed from the seventies and one that is foreseen to develop to possibly unimaginable heights in the near future, since neuropeptides are widespread distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and they are involved in many pathologies (Parkinson s disease, Alzheimer s disease, schizophrenia, depression&). Growing numbers of researches (cell biologists, biochemists, geneticists, histologists, pharmacologists, physiologists, psychiatrists, pathologists, immunologists, neurobiologists, psychologists&) are currently involved in this discipline and increasingly sophisticated methods for its study are becoming available. Our main aims in writing this book on neuropeptides were the following: a) to review the general data that exist on neuropeptides; b) to show the results found in several research works on the distribution and functions of neuropeptides; and c) to show the future perspectives on neuropeptide research. In this sense, the text has been divided in four parts. The first entitled Introduction to Neuropeptides includes the general data on neuropeptides such as: concepts of neuropeptide, neurotransmitter, neuromodulator and neurohormone, families of neuropeptides, phylogeny and ontogeny of neuropeptides, biosynthesis of neuropeptides, release and receptors of neuropeptides, enzymatic degradation of neuropeptides, methodologies used in the study of neuropeptides and distribution of neuropeptides (Chapter 1). The second part called Distribution of Neuropeptides includes the results obtained by different research groups on the distribution of neuropeptides in the cat spinal cord, brainstem, diencephalon and cerebral cortex, as well as on the distribution of neuropeptides in the dog brainstem and diencephalon and in the alpaca brainstem (Chapters 2-7). The third part deals with the Functions of the Neuropeptides and includes a review chapter on such functions (involvement of neuropeptides in pain, analgesia, thermoregulation, glucoregulation, food and water intake, immunoregulation, wakefulness and sleep, learning and memory) (Chapter 8) and a specific chapter on the implication of neuropeptides in cardiovascular control (Chapter 9). The aim of the fourth part was to show the Pathophysiology of the Neuropeptides . Thus, there is a chapter in which the involvement of neuropeptides in several pathologies such as asthma, arthritis, Alzheimer s disease, Parkinson s disease, alcoholism, schizophrenia, depression, stress and suicide is reviewed. In such chapter, the implication of neuropeptides in aging will be also reviewed (Chapter 10). Moreover, in the fourth part three specific chapters will be focused on the involvement of neuropeptides in migraine and Parkinson s and Alzheimer s disease (Chapters 11, 12), as well as on the implications of neuropeptides and NK-1 receptor antagonists in cancer research (Chapter 13). This book is directed not only to researchers interested in the field of neuropeptides, but to Life and Health Sciences Ph.D. students. For this reason, we have included three review chapters on the general concerning of neuropeptides (Chapter 1), the functional implications of neuropeptides (Chapter 8) and on the pathophysiology of the neuropeptides (Chapter 10). We hope that this text help to students to be enthusiasm in the study of neuropeptides and to introduce them in this field, since much remains to be studied on the distribution and functions of neuropeptides. Finally, we thank to Mercedes de León the help received before and during the redaction of this book.

Neuropeptide Systems as Targets for Parasite and Pest Control by Timothy G. Geary,Aaron Maule Pdf

The need to continually discover new agents for the control or treatment of invertebrate pests and pathogens is undeniable. Agriculture, both animal and plant, succeeds only to the extent that arthropod and helminth consumers, vectors and pathogens can be kept at bay. Humans and their companion animals are also plagued by invertebrate parasites. The deployment of chemical agents for these purposes inevitably elicits the selection of resistant populations of the targets of control, necessitating a regular introduction of new kinds of molecules. Experience in other areas of chemotherapy has shown that a thorough understanding of the biology of disease is an essential platform upon which to build a discovery program. Unfortunately, investment of research resources into understanding the basic physiology of invertebrates as a strategy to illuminate new molecular targets for pesticide and parasiticide discovery has been scarce, and the pace of introduction of new molecules for these indications has been slowed as a result. An exciting and so far unexploited area to explore in this regard is invertebrate neuropeptide physiology. This book was assembled to focus attention on this promising field by compiling a comprehensive review of recent research on neuropeptides in arthropods and helminths, with contributions from many of the leading laboratories working on these systems.

Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders aims to engage young caregivers in psychiatry, psychology, nursing and social work so that they will be able to become well informed about this significant--and at times confusing--illness. Because schizophrenia is considered to be one of the most complicated and severe psychiatric disorders, this book has the goal of summarizing key issues of the illness, such as its presentation, frequency and age of onset, and diagnostic characteristics. It also contains informative chapters about the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, ranging from brain development issues, genetics, and likely abnormalities in neurotransmitters. This book will give young professionals and those joining the field an excellent and accessible background to treatment. In this area, Schizophrenia and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders provides a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment initiation, strategies for non-response, approaches of therapy, and importantly, ways to provide family therapy and support.

Coulometric Electrode Array Detectors for HPLC by I.H. Acworth,M. Naoi,Hasan Parvez,S. Parvez Pdf

This sixth volume in the book series Progress in HPLC-HPCE examines the enhancement of high- performance liquid chromatography through the development of an advanced mode of electrochemical detection (ECD) --- the coulometric array detection --- from its initial, yet problematic, amperometric (thin-layer) design to the highly sensitive, selective and stable coulometric (flow-through) design. Unlike amperometric electrodes, the coulometric electrode is 100% efficient and measures signals from all of the analyte passing through it, which leads to improved sensitivity as well as unique selectivity. The coulometric electrode array offers the resolution of the photodiode array with the extreme sensitivity of an electrochemical detector.

Neglected Factors in Pharmacology and Neuroscience Research by V. Claassen Pdf

Techniques in the Behavioral and Neural Sciences, Volume 12: Neglected Factors in Pharmacology and Neuroscience Research: Biopharmaceutics, Animal Characteristics, Maintenance, Testing Conditions can be used as reference in the improvement of test designs for biochemists and physiologists in the control of test conditions. The book is divided into five sections. The introduction deals with the uncertainty of animal characteristics and test conditions as hindrances to the development of general insight into biological regulatory mechanism. The first section discusses biopharmaceutics — the interaction of drugs when interacting with molecules or enzymes in sufficient concentration at a specific site of action. The second section reviews animal characteristics in terms of strain differences, sex differences, and changes during development and aging of the subject. The third section discusses the maintenance of experimental animals such as housing conditions, food composition, and water intake as these kinds of environmental factors may shape the phenotype and responsiveness of the experimental animal. The fourth section explains the testing conditions such as metabolic effects and drug interactions, anesthesia, stress, and even the effects on circadian rhythms. The last section is a discussion on the importance of experimental results. This section covers internal and external validities and statistical inference. The author concludes that the design of any experiment should include a power analysis so that reliable and valuable conclusions can follow. Biochemists, physiologists, pharmacokineticists, toxicologists, chemical researchers, and others for whom drugs are their main focus of study will find this book valuable.

Galanin by Tomas Hökfelt Pdf

Galanin is a neuropeptide found both in the central and peripheral nervous system. The 29-amino acid peptide (named after its N-terminal glycine and C-terminal alanine) was identified in 1983 by its C-terminal amidation. This 'reverse' approach, that is to discover a substance through a distinct chemical feature, and only subsequently to characterize its biological activity, was novel and has been successful in the identification of several other peptides. After the structure of galanin was determined in 1983, functional studies were performed with material purified from natural sources until the synthetic form of the peptide became available. Galanin can act as transmitter, modulator and trophic factor, and is involved in a number of physiological processes such as hormone secretion, cardiovascular mechanisms, feeding and cognition. This peptide may also be of significance for a number of pathological processes/disorders including pain, depression, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, addiction and cancer. This wide diversity of actions is mediated by three galanin receptor subtypes. The studies reviewed in this volume give a fairly complete overview of the spectrum of the biological actions and functions of galanin and its receptors and on possible therapeutic applications in a number of pathological conditions.
