"New worlds for old words / Mundos nuevos para viejas palabras" is a collection of chapters on the theme of lexical borrowing in the languages of Western Europe with particular focus on borrowing from Latin, or from Greek via Latin, into Spanish. Such cultured, or “learnèd” borrowing—as it has sometimes been designated—, is an especially intriguing feature of the Romance languages, since they also derive from Latin. It is also of particular interest to historical linguists since it is an example of what has been called “change from above”: innovation first evidenced in the written usage of the culturally élite which then diffuses into more general acceptance, with the result that some cultured borrowings (e.g. problem/problema, social, program(me)/programa) are now amongst the most common words in the modern languages. Despite their enormous influence on such major languages as English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian, the mechanisms by which these borrowings become established in their host languages have to date been relatively little studied. This book seeks to make a contribution to this question and revive interest in what has become a neglected area of historical linguistics and contains contributions both by internationally respected scholars and new researchers in the field. This bilingual collection will appeal to academics, scholars, and postgraduate students of Hispanic Studies, Cultural History, and particularly Historical Linguistics and Romance Linguistics. "New worlds for old words / Mundos nuevos para viejas palabras" es una colección sobre los préstamos léxicos en los idiomas de Europa occidental, centrándose sobre todo en los préstamos del latín, o del griego a través del latín, al español. Los cultismos son un rasgo especialmente interesante de las lenguas romances, ya que ellos mismos proceden del latín. También es de gran interés para la lingüística histórica dado que es un ejemplo de lo que se conoce como “cambio desde arriba”: cambios atestiguados primero en la lengua escrita de la élite cultural que luego comienza a tener un uso más generalizado, y cuyo resultado es que algunos de estos cultismos (por ejemplo “problema”, “social”, “programa”) se encuentran entre las palabras más comunes en los idiomas modernos. A pesar de su enorme influencia en lenguas tan importantes como el inglés, el español, el portugués, el francés o el italiano, los mecanismos por los que estos préstamos se establecen en los idiomas de acogida se han estudiado relativamente poco hasta ahora. Este volumen es una contribución a esta cuestión y su objetivo es reavivar el interés en lo que se ha convertido en un área olvidada de la lingüística diacrónica. From the 16th century onwards, Europeans encountered languages in the Americas, Africa, and Asia which were radically different from any of the languages of the Old World. Missionaries were in the forefront of this encounter: in order to speak to potential converts, they needed to learn local languages. A great wealth of missionary grammars survives from the 16th century onwards. Some of these are precious records of the languages they document, and all of them witness their authors' attempts to develop the methods of grammatical description with which they were familiar, to accommodate dramatically new linguistic features.This book is the first monograph covering the whole Portuguese grammatical tradition outside Portugal. Its aim is to provide an integrated description, analysis and evaluation of the missionary grammars which were written in Portuguese. Between them, these grammars covered a huge range of languages: in Asia, Tamil, four Indo-Aryan languages and Japanese; in Brazil, Kipeá and Tupinambá; in Africa and the African diaspora, Kimbundu and Sena (from the modern Angola and Mozambique respectively).Each text is placed in its historical context, and its linguistic context is analyzed, with particular attention to orthography, the parts of speech system, morphology and syntax. Whenever possible, pedagogical features of the grammars are discussed, together with their treatment of language variation and pragmatics, and the evidence they provide for the missionaries' attitude towards the languages they studied.

Se presentan algunas de las comunicaciones presentadas en el XIII Congreso Internacional de la AJIHLE, Asociación de Jóvenes Investigadores de Historiografía e Historia de la Lengua Española, celebrada en, Salamanca (España), en abril de 2013. Todo aquí está dedicado al pasado, a la historia: a la historia de fenómenos, acontecimientos y datos lingüísticos; a la historia de los estudios y tratamientos dados a esos fenómenos, acontecimientos y datos; y ello en grado diverso. De la historia de las ideas (meta-)lingüísticas sobre el español se ocupan cuatro trabajos (gramaticografía, lexicografía, análisis del discurso) y una mesa redonda de carácter panorámico y metodológico a propósito de la historia e historiografía de las ideas gramaticales (focalizada en la lengua española). De la historia del español trata todo lo demás (25 trabajos; poco más de un 80% del total): artículos sobre asuntos muy variados asignables a los ámbitos de la «Lingüística descriptiva diacrónica», por un lado (más o menos, la «gramática histórica» de los mayores): fonética, representación gráfica de unidades fónicas, sufijos, formación de palabras, clíticos, clases de palabras (numerales, tipos de verbos, adverbios, nexos), gramaticalización de unidades, formas verbales, voseo, dequeísmo… Artículos, por el otro lado, clasificables bajo el marbete de «Estudios sobre la historia» (no precisamente externa) «de la lengua española»; se encuentran aquí aportaciones de temática, metodología y alcance muy diversos: sobre traducciones, relaciones culturales, recepción de corrientes, ideas y términos, variedades diacrónicas y diatópicas, léxico y familias léxicas, terminología, historia de palabras, documentación e inventarios, o nuevos modelos de edición. El lector está accediendo desde estas líneas a un acertado maridaje de asuntos varios de naturaleza histórico-lingüística; se está adentrando, desde este exordio, en una excelente miscelánea —de ejecución cabal por parte de las editoras del volumen— que le permitirá tomar consciencia de la vitalidad y productividad investigadoras de estos jóvenes, así como de la diversidad de cuestiones y líneas de investigación abiertas de que se han hecho cargo los miembros de la asociación. El lector del libro podrá, por último, hacerse una atinada composición de lugar del presente y del futuro próximo de las investigaciones y la metodología de la investigación sobre el pasado de nuestra lengua.
