Build Your Own Farm Tools by Josh Volk Pdf

Josh Volk, author of the best-selling Compact Farms, offers small-scale farmers an in-depth guide to building customized equipment that will save time and money and introduce much-needed efficiencies to their operations. Volk begins with the basics, such as setting up a workshop and understanding design principles, mechanical principles, and materials properties, then presents plans for making 15 tools suited to small-farm tasks and processes. Each project includes an explanation of the tool’s purpose and use, as well as the time commitment, skill level, and equipment required to build it. Projects range from the super-simple (requiring a half-day to build) to the more complex, and include how-to photographs and illustrations with variations for customizing the finished implement. Along with instructions for building items such as simple seedling benches, a mini barrel washer, a DIY germination chamber, and a rolling pack table, Volk addresses systems design for farm efficiency, including how to design an effective drip irrigation system and how to set up spreadsheets for collecting important planning, planting, and market data. The New Farm by Brent Preston Pdf

The inspiring and sometimes hilarious story of a family that quit the rat race and left the city to live out their ideals on an organic farm, and ended up building a model for a new kind of agriculture. You know those books where the city folks move to the country and have all kinds of crazy misadventures? Where the barnyard is a place of bucolic harmony and each passing season brings the author closer to understanding his proper place in the natural order? You know those books where the primary objective is not so much farming, but writing about farming? This isn’t that kind of book. It’s true that Brent Preston and Gillian Flies did leave the city and move to the country, and they did make a lot of stupid mistakes, some of which are pretty funny in hindsight. But their goal from the beginning was to build a real farm, one that would sustain their family, heal their environment, and nourish their community. It was a goal that was achieved not through bucolic self-reflection, but through a decade of grinding toil and perseverance. Told with humour and heart in Preston’s unflinchingly honest voice, The New Farm is the story of one family’s transition from die-hard urbanites to bona fide farmers and passionate advocates for a more just and sustainable food system. It’s the story of how a couple of young professionals learned not just how to grow food, but how to succeed at the business of farming. And it’s the story of how a small, sustainable, organic farm ended up providing not just a livelihood, but a happy, meaningful and fulfilling way of life.

The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables by Ben Hartman Pdf

At Clay Bottom Farm, author Ben Hartman and staff practice kaizen, or continuous improvement, cutting out more waste--of time, labor, space, money, and more--every year and aligning their organic production more tightly with customer demand. Applied alongside other lean principles originally developed by the Japanese auto industry, the end result has been increased profits and less work. In this field-guide companion to his award-winning first book, The Lean Farm, Hartman shows market vegetable growers in even more detail how Clay Bottom Farm implements lean thinking in every area of their work, including using kanbans, or replacement signals, to maximize land use; germination chambers to reduce defect waste; and right-sized machinery to save money and labor and increase efficiency. From finding land and assessing infrastructure needs to selling perfect produce at the farmers market, The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables digs deeper into specific, tested methods for waste-free farming that not only help farmers become more successful but make the work more enjoyable. These methods include: Using Japanese paper pot transplanters Building your own germinating chambers Leaning up your greenhouse Making and applying simple composts Using lean techniques for pest and weed control Creating Heijunka, or load-leveling calendars for efficient planning Farming is not static, and improvement requires constant change. The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables offers strategies for farmers to stay flexible and profitable even in the face of changing weather and markets. Much more than a simple exercise in cost-cutting, lean farming is about growing better, not cheaper, food--the food your customers want.

With their classic barns and fences, American small farms, and the buildings that support these farms, serve a much-needed purpose as much today as then have in the past. Even with the advent of new technology frequently used on farms, these buildings have changed relatively little and are still used to house the animals that so many small farm owners work with and the feed, supplies, and equipment needed to maintain those animals. Every well-meaning farmer or property owner with livestock, small animals, or farming equipment has need of a barn or a series of outbuildings. Unfortunately, many farmers now rely on expensive contractors and construction companies to do a job many farmers traditionally undertook themselves. Knowing how to build these structures is not only a lost American art form, it is also a skill that can save you thousands of dollars. This book has been designed to ensure everyone who has ever thought of building their own barns, outbuildings, or animal pens knows exactly what is entailed-from inception of the design to the final construction stages. You will learn exactly what you need to start building outbuildings, barns, farming equipment, and farm supplies. For each of the structures showed within this book, you will learn the required dimensions and extra space you might not have previously considered, including space for your motorized Machinery, a workshop for maintaining your equipment, and loft space for hay bales, feed, and farming equipment. Regardless of what you need for your small farm or property, you will have a complete list of detailed building design plans. You will learn which building materials are best for creating your needed items as well as the best designs and methods of buildings. The companion CD-ROM contains design plans in PDF format for all the structures shown in the book plus bonus plans. Each design plan offers detailed instructions, supply lists, and diagrams. This book offers plans for building barns, storage structures, animal pens, storage sheds, and greenhouses. Farm Buildings (Classic Reprint) by William Arthur Foster Pdf

Excerpt from Farm Buildings This book treats of the location, planning, construction and repair of farm buildings. The material presented was collected from various sources by the authors; from their experience as farmers, experiment station workers and teachers. An effort has been made to group and present this material in an order which would make it practicable as a text book for college students, a reference for secondary schools and a source of information for the farmer. The farm building problems have received more attention during the past decade than during the previous century. New types of buildings have been developed, new materials have come into general use and new constructions have replaced the old. Furthermore, the change of agricultural methods has affected farm building problems. For instance, expensive farm machinery must be protected from weather and live stock requires shelter by buildings formerly offered by timber. An effort was made to pick out the practical and simple and present it in such a manner so it could be utilized by the student or farmer as a source of information and guide in building. While a course of study is not outlined, the teacher of farm building construction will find many problems which may be selected to fit any course. Practical Farm Buildings: Plans and Suggestions by Andrew Frederick Hunter Pdf

"Farm-building plans are as variable, almost, as is the individuality of those building and using them, and in making this selection, we have been guided by the practical merits of the designs, including only such as have proved their value by constant use on the farm. In poultry buildings it has been our special purpose to present plans which illustrate the marked tendency of recent years, which has been to open up the houses to sunshine and fresh air; a tendency which makes conditions more wholesome and promotes the good health and greater profitableness of the flocks." This book contains illustrations and plans for the construction of various structures that would be found on the average farm.

The Book of Farm-Buildings by Henry Stephens Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Farm-Buildings: Their Arrangement and Construction The object of this work is twofold - one, to establish principles upon which the planning of farm-buildings should be based - the other, to concentrate correct and valuable information on the nature and use of the materials employed in constructing farm-buildings. It may astonish those of our readers who are agriculturists, to learn for the first time that principles should still be sought for in the planning of farm-steadings, after so long an experience of their use. The surprise would be greatly modified were they to take into consideration the care that should be bestowed in placing the numerous apartments of steadings relatively where they should be; and they would then discover that these are generally by no means so conveniently arranged as they might be. At any rate, it is clear that the same arrangement of apartments in a steading for a pastoral farm, where livestock alone are reared, would not be suitable for a strong clay land farm, where no stock are reared at all. We contrast these two extreme cases to make our meaning the clearer. But, however great a difference of arrangement is required in such extreme cases, a material difference also exists in cases even more alike. It will at once be admitted that a different arrangement should be made where stock are reared from where they are not; but even where stock are reared, it must also be conceded that considerable difference in the arrangement is required where the sorts of farming differ.
