The Making of the Modern Architect and Engineer by Ulrich Pfammatter Pdf

The very first school for architecture came into being when the Ecole Polytechnique opened its gates in Paris in 1794 and with this, the profession of the architect as we understand it today was born. Using preiously unpublished texts and visual material, Ulrich Pfammatter traces in fascinating detail the origins and subsequent development of the scientific and industrial training of architects and engineers. He explores the growth of the architecture schools in Paris, Karlsruhe, Zürich, London and the USA, and by considering important exponents such as Durand, Reynaud, Mary, Weinbrenner, Semper, Dufour, Klenze, Eiffel and Jenney he provides a detailed exposition of this important chapter in civil engineering and architectural history.

Collaborations in Architecture and Engineering by Clare Olsen,Sinead Mac Namara Pdf

Collaborations in Architecture and Engineering focuses on team-building and problem-solving between architects and engineers to prepare you for working together in practice. It provides an overview and foundation for interdisciplinary collaboration so that you can create innovative proposals for optimization, performance, and aesthetic goals. It also shows you how to solve real-world problems and how to engage creatively with technological challenges so that you can be a productive member of any team. The authors, an architect and an engineer, share guidelines learned from their experiences and observations on how to insure productive communication, engage in interdisciplinary discussions, and establish common goals and values. Throughout the book are many case study examples of architect and engineer collaborations––such as those between SANAA and Mutsuro Sasaki, Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, Steven Holl and Guy Nordenson, and SHoP Architects and ARUP. The book also includes a discussion about integrated project delivery (IPD) contracts and administration, so you'll be ready for better integration.

The Architect's Engineer by Sir Nigel Thompson Pdf

Sir Nigel Thompson walked to school around the bomb craters of the London Blitz--it made him want to build things, rather than knock them down. After studying structural engineering in Africa, he worked on hospitals and theaters in London, and later headed the team that designed University of Qatar. He went on to design Embankment Place, a massive office complex built over London's Charing Cross railway station. Turning from building to rebuilding, he explored construction opportunities for British firms during the Gulf War, in Kuwait's still-burning oil fields. Following the 1999 bombing of Serbia and Kosovo, he led a reconstruction task force in Kosovo at the request of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, for which he was knighted. Thompson's memoir details his long career in architectural design and construction, and in restorative development.

Structure As Architecture by Andrew Charleson Pdf

Structure As Architecture provides readers with an accessible insight into the relationship between structure and architecture, focusing on the design principles that relate to both fields. Over one hundred case studies of contemporary buildings from countries across the globe including the UK, the US, France, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong and Australia are interspersed throughout the book. The author has visited and photographed each of these examples and analyzed them to show how structure plays a significant architectural role, as well as bearing loads. This is a highly illustrated sourcebook, providing a new insight into the role of structure, and discussing the point where the technical and the aesthetic meet to create the discipline of ‘architecture’.

Sketching for Engineers and Architects by Ron Slade Pdf

Using real working drawings from a 50 year career, Ron Slade shows how drawing remains at the heart of the design process in the everyday working life of engineers and architects. The book explains simple techniques that can be learnt and used to enhance any professional’s natural ability. Using over 180 categorised examples it demonstrates that drawing remains the fastest, clearest and most effective means of design communication. Unlike many other books on drawing in the construction industry, this book is ‘engineer led’ and science oriented but effectively shows that there is a close affinity between the working methods of architects and engineers.

William Strickland by Agnes Addison Gilchrist Pdf

In Against Amnesia, Nancy J. Peterson addresses the ongoing postmodernist debate over the possibility and relevance of documentary and official histories. Drawing on Adrienne Rich's claim that women's literature and multicultural literature vigorously resist the amnesia and nostalgia that characterize mainstream North American culture, Peterson examines the struggles toward collective memory in a wealth of contemporary women's writing. Peterson's in-depth analyses of selected works by Louise Erdrich, Toni Morrison, Irena Klepfisz, Joy Kogawa, and other contemporary women writers illustrate the ways in which these authors recover and represent the historical memories attached to their racial/ethnic backgrounds. Their works probe traumatic moments in the marginalized histories of minority peoples, including Native American genocide and dispossession; African American slavery, migration, and displacement; the Holocaust; and the internment of people of Japanese ancestry during World War II. Peterson contends that these writers employ literary strategies that call attention to the gaps and silences of official histories. At the same time, these literary strategies allow the authors to narrate resonant counterhistories. Rejecting the playfully imaginative treatment of history found in typical postmodern novels, these contemporary women writers seek to reconstruct historical narratives in their texts and thereby reinvigorate historical memory in contemporary American culture.
