Human Capital and Regional Development in Europe by Claude Diebolt,Ralph Hippe Pdf

Human capital is of utmost importance for the future of our knowledge economies and societies. However, it is unequally distributed in Europe, contributing to marked spatial patterns of economic prosperity within and across countries. In many cases, these patterns have a long history. To understand them better, it requires to go back in time, when mass schooling was starting to become a reality across Europe. Taking a long-run perspective over more than 150 years, this book shows the development and the distribution of human capital in the regions of Europe and its connections with the economy. It provides insights into recent research findings in this area, including theoretical advances and the use of new empirical data.

Human Capital and Economic Growth by Andreas Savvides,Thanasis Stengos Pdf

This book provides an in-depth investigation of the link between human capital and economic growth. The authors take an innovative approach, examining the determinants of economic growth through a historical overview of the concept of human capital. The text fosters a deep understanding of the connection between human capital and economic growth through the exploration of different theoretical approaches, a review of the literature, and the application of nonlinear estimation techniques to a comprehensive data set. The authors discuss nonparametric econometric techniques and their application to estimating nonlinearities—which has emerged as one of the most salient features of empirical work in modeling the human capital-growth relationship, and the process of economic growth in general. By delving into the topic from theoretical and empirical standpoints, this book offers an insightful new view that will be extremely useful for scholars, students, and policy makers.

The Impact of Human Capital on Growth by Ms.Sonia Brunschwig,Mr.Emilio Sacerdoti,Mr.Jon Tang Pdf

This paper analyzes the impact of human capital on growth, on the basis of refined calculations of human capital, and with a focus on West Africa. Using a growth-accounting methodology, it distinguishes the sources of growth between the accumulation of factors of production and changes in production intensity or efficiency. Private capital is found to be particularly important to growth, but human capital appears not to be significant. The paper also identifies the terms of trade, trade openness, the government deficit, and the share of government investment in total investment as key policy variables affecting growth.

World Development Report 2019 by World Bank Pdf

Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.

Human Capital and Development by Ju-Ho Lee,Hyeok Jeong,Song Chang Hong Pdf

During recent decades, Korea has been one of only a handful of countries that have made the successful transformation to become a developed nation by simultaneously achieving persistent economic growth combined with a democratic political system. Experts and political leaders worldwide have attributed this achievement to investments in people or, in other words, the power of education. Whilst numerous books have highlighted the role of industrial policies, technological growth, and international trade in Korea’s development process, this is one of the first to focus on the role of human capital. It shows how the accumulation of human capital aided transformation and helps explain the policies, strategies and challenges that Korea faces now and in the future.

The Role of Human Capital in Economic Growth by Mr.Paolo Mauro,Mr.Enric Fernandez Pdf

This study constructs an index of human capital for the Spanish labor force over the past two decades and projects it over the next decade on the basis of likely demographic developments. The methodology considers both educational attainment resulting from formal schooling and improvements in workers’ productivity resulting from experience, or “learning by doing.” Furthermore, it allows for the fact that people with higher education accumulate human capital through learning by doing at a faster pace than less educated workers or, in other words, that the full returns to formal schooling are realized with a lag of many years. Using this index, a growth accounting exercise is conducted to estimate the impact of human capital accumulation on economic growth over the past two decades. Finally, potential output growth is projected over the next few years, taking into account the impact of human capital accumulation.

The Influence of Human Capital on Economic Growth by Riyanto Wujarso Pdf

"The Influence of Human Capital on Economic Growth" delves into a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between human capital and regional financial development in West Java Province. This research covers the period from 2017 to 2019 and employs a quantitative research approach using mathematical analysis techniques. To gather data for the analysis, the book relies on secondary sources, specifically the data reports provided by the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik or BPS). These reports offer valuable information crucial for understanding the dynamics of regional financial development in West Java Province. The research technique utilized in this study is panel regression, specifically employing the GLS fixed-effect model approach. This statistical method allows for the examination of both cross-sectional and time series data, making it suitable for analyzing the relationship between human capital and regional financial development over a specific time period. The GLS fixed-effect model accounts for individual characteristics of each region in West Java Province, providing a more accurate estimation of the impact of human capital on financial growth. The study's findings shed light on the critical role of human capital, with a specific focus on education, in influencing economic growth in West Java Province. The estimation results highlight the significant impact of the education variable on the region's financial development, emphasizing the importance of investing in education and improving educational infrastructure to enhance the quality of the workforce and stimulate economic growth. While the relationship between human capital and financial development extends beyond education alone, the estimation results reveal education as the most dominant factor influencing financial development in West Java Province. Therefore, efforts to improve the education level of the workforce should be prioritized to enhance productivity and drive economic progress. Based on the research findings, the book proposes recommendations for the local governments in West Java Province. It suggests a substantial increase in regional expenditure allocations specifically dedicated to the education and health sectors to improve the quality of education and healthcare. By prioritizing human capital development and creating an enabling environment for skills enhancement, West Java Province can pave the way for sustainable and inclusive financial growth. "The Influence of Human Capital on Economic Growth" provides valuable insights into the impact of human capital on regional financial development in West Java Province. It emphasizes the significant role of education in fostering economic growth and calls for increased investments in education and health sectors. By prioritizing human capital development and creating an enabling environment for skills enhancement, West Java Province can pave the way for sustainable and inclusive financial growth.

Measuring Human Capital by Barbara Fraumeni Pdf

Measuring Human Capital addresses a country’s most important resource: its own people. Bettering human capital benefits individuals and their country and leads to improved sustainability for the future. For many years economists only used Gross Domestic Product (GDP), now acknowledged to be inadequate without supplemental measures, to gauge a country’s overall value. There is now a recognition that many variables contribute to a country’s worth, which make accurate measurement difficult. Looking beyond GDP by focusing on human capital, researchers, policymakers, government officials, and students can understand what elements impact human capital and how they might improve it in order to increase economic growth and well-being. Addresses six major measures of human capital, covering at least 130 countries Describes both monetary and index estimates Includes two monetary measures by the World Bank and the Inclusive Wealth Report by UNEP and the Urban Institute of Kyushu University Includes four index measures by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation of the University of Washington, United Nations Development Programme, World Economic Forum, and World Bank Includes two country chapters, one on China and the other on the United States

Human Capital and Development by Natteri Siddharthan,Krishnan Narayanan Pdf

The papers included in this volume cover several aspects of human capital. It starts with the role of human capital in influencing productivity, employment and growth of employment. The chapters show that Indian States that have been neglecting schooling and health facilities have become victims in terms of low productivity and lower rates of employment. Consequently, employment cannot be increased without spending on education and health. Furthermore, the unorganised sector in India cannot provide gainful employment as productivity in this sector is low and is also declining. Skill intensity influences mainly productivity in the organised sector. As a result, states that have been neglecting human capital would lose on both counts. The chapters also reveal that human capital could be substituted for energy use and help in reducing energy consumption and pollution. India is also one of the important exporters of human capital and the non resident Indians send remittances back to India. The volume indicates that remittances play a significant role in poverty reduction and increase in per capita consumption levels. In addition remittances, unlike foreign direct investments and portfolio investments, are less erratic and are not influenced by slowdown in the world economy. Poverty could also be directly attacked through the use of anti poverty programmes like NREGA. This volume provides an analytical framework and a theoretical model to analyse the impact of these programmes to examine their influence on labour demand, income, prices and productivity. The volume also emphasises the crucial role of the government in directly running education institutions. As seen from the volume government run engineering institutions are technically more efficient than the private run ones.
