The Mind and Its Education (Classic Reprint) by George Herbert Betts Pdf

Excerpt from The Mind and Its Education This book is intended as an introduction to psychology for teachers, both in their private study and their Reading Circle classes, for students in secondary schools, normal schools or colleges, and for general readers. Its appearance is an immediate outgrowth of various courses of lectures on psychology and education given to teachers and elementary students in education. More remotely, it owes its origin to a suggestion received from Prof. John Dewey when the writer was a student in his classes. Said Professor Dewey: "The teacher is equally under the necessity of knowing each of the two factors in the educational process - culture and the child; that is, subject-matter and psychology - not the technicalities and controversial points of psychology, but its broad and fundamental truths, upon which practically all are agreed, and which, fortunately, are simple and easily understood." This statement furnishes the standpoint, in the following pages, for both subject-matter and method of treatment. First, the attempt has been made to present only fundamental truths, which, let us be thankful, are but little subject to controversy. The Mind and Its Education by George Herbert Betts Pdf

The Mind and Its Education By George Herbert Betts The Personal Character of Consciousness.-Mind can be observed and known. But each one can know directly only his own mind, and not another's. You and I may look into each other's face and there guess the meaning that lies back of the smile or frown or flash of the eye, and so read something of the mind's activity. But neither directly meets the other's mind. I may learn to recognize your features, know your voice, respond to the clasp of your hand; but the mind, the consciousness, which does your thinking and feels your joys and sorrows, I can never know completely. Indeed I can never know your mind at all except through your bodily acts and expressions. Nor is there any way in which you can reveal your mind, your spiritual self, to me except through these means. Mind Studies for Young Teachers (Classic Reprint) by Jerome Allen Pdf

Excerpt from Mind Studies for Young Teachers There are many teachers who know little about psychology, and who have a desire to be better informed concerning its principles, especially its relation to the work of teaching. For the aid of such, this book has been prepared. But it is not a psychology, -only an introduction to it, aiming to give some fundamental principles, together with something concerning the phi losophy of education. Its method is subjective rather than objective, leading the student to watch mental pro cesses, and draw his own conclusions. Little of mind science, that is of use to the teacher, can be learned by reading books. N 0 subject is more dependent upon oh servation and experiment than this. When mind-growth and mental activities are understood by teachers, instruo tion will become scientific, and not, as is now too fre quently the case, empirical. If this little volume shall serve to hasten the time when teaching shall be more a profession and less a vocation, the author will have ao complished all he designed. Mental Development and Education (Classic Reprint) by M. V. O'shea Pdf

Excerpt from Mental Development and Education In writing this volume the author has had constantly in mind the interests and needs of teachers in service and also persons who are preparing to teach. Consequently those aspects only of mental development and of education which directly concern those who train the young have received attention; all strictly technical and speculative discussion has been avoided. No attempt has been made to treat comprehensively the psychology of childhood and youth or educational values and methods. Two questions have guided the discussion throughout; - first, How does the individual normally respond at different periods in his development to the typical situations, physical, intellectual, aesthetic and social, in which he is placed; and second, How can he best appropriate the materials and benefits of education so that he can utilize them to greatest advantage in daily life? The point of view is that afforded by present-day biological psychology. For those who may not at first glance see just what this point of view is, it may be said that one who regards human nature from the standpoint of biological psychology seeks to explain the behavior of a child or a youth on the basis of natural laws governing the development of his body, his intellect and his character. It is seen that the individual is at birth equipped with tendencies which represent some of the activities which have proved of service in the life of his ancestors, and these tendencies are manifested in varying degrees and forms in the course of development from birth to maturity. The views here presented, are the fruits of long and mature reflection, thorough investigation, and much practical experience as a teacher, and it is believed, that although some of them may be considered bold and original, they will be found to bear the test of rigorous ex amination, and the closest scrutiny. Child Mind by Benjamin Dumville Pdf

Excerpt from Child Mind: An Introduction to Psychology for Teachers This book treats in a simpler and more abbreviated form the same matter as that dealt with in the larger work entitled The Fundamentals of Psychology. It is intended for use by students in training colleges, by candidates preparing for such professional examinations as the Board of Education Teacher's Certificate, and by young teachers generally. It is intended to be merely an introduction to the subject Of Educational Psychology, and, it is hoped, will serve as an inducement to a further study of the subject. Chapters VIII, IX., and XI. Of this book have been specially added with a view to covering more completely the Syllabus of the Board Of Education for candidates for the Teacher's Certificate. The book should prove specially helpful in training colleges, where the amount of time devoted to Psychology, as well as other considerations, makes the use Of a larger and more detailed work impossible. Many minor matters have had to be omitted, and much Of what is expounded has had to be treated in popular and summary form. But, in spite of its brevity, the book will be found to give a clear account of the nature and development of child mind, so far as it is understood. The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training by W. E. Urwick Pdf

Excerpt from The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training: Being a Short Study of Some Processes of Learning and Teaching The reasons for writing this book are sufficiently set forth in the introduction. It is not a treatise on psychology, still less a new and full-fledged theory of education. Nor, on the other hand, is it a complete handbook for teachers. It is rather an attempt to set forth in simple and, as far as possible, untechnical language some results already obtained from a study of mind growth as an organic process, and to establish a clear and definite connexion between those processes of learning which mind possesses, and the methods by which it should be taught and trained. These chapters will, it is hoped, enable the young teacher to use in practice the facts which he learns in his outline study of physiology and psychology, and provide the experienced teacher with a framework on to which he may fit the results of his experience without committing himself to any one philosophic system. The Principles of Intellectual Education (Classic Reprint) by F. H. Matthews Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Intellectual Education What then is the aim of education? Only one answer in general terms is possible - it is to prepare for life. But when we begin to work out in detail all that is involved in this apparently simple formula, we begin to be conscious of the difficulties before us. Even setting aside the question of the formation of character, which does not fall directly within the scope of this treatise, and limiting ourselves strictly to the training of the intellect, it is clear that the same qualities do not suit all walks of life, and that the possibility of developing adequately both the special qualities required for special pursuits and the general qualities common to all, if any such there be, will depend in both cases alike on the natural quick ness and adaptability of the mind to be trained and the length of time during which the child can be kept at school. Hence four questions arise (i) What are the general qualities of mind which education is able to develop, if any? (2) What special qualities fit special walks? (3) What is the natural character and adaptability of the mind under training? (4) How long can that training be continued? Now two of these questions, the second and the fourth, cannot be handled effectively in a general disquisition upon education. They require special treatment to be of any great value. At the same time they cannot be put aside altogether. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Text-Book in the Principles of Education (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Norton Henderson Pdf

Excerpt from A d104-Book in the Principles of Education In the following pages I have endeavored to present in a systematic way the outlines of a theory of education from the point of view of evolution. The evolutionary conception has been applied to educational theory more or less consistently by all writers on the subject since the time of Froebel. The development of more and more scientific knowledge in regard to the history of life, of mind, and of society has, however, made possible constant reconstruction of the general principles, in terms of which the process of evolution through education is to be conceived. I have tried to draw into a unified scheme what seem to me the essential features of current thought on this subject to-day. To accomplish this result in anything like an adequate manner, and at the same time make those practical applications of principles which a book on the "Principles of Education" may be expected to offer, it has been necessary to give to certain fundamental conceptions a very condensed and, I fear, somewhat abstract treatment. Such is especially the case in the chapter on "Conscious Learning," which, had space been clearly available, I should gladly have expanded by the addition of more illustration. In the chapter on "Readjustment, its Meaning, Conditions, and Methods," I have given the essential features of my theory of evolution. To the schoolman interested primarily in practice this may seem like a somewhat formidable introduction to so practical a subject as the Principles of Education should be.
