Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Teaching Experience is beginning to show that teaching, like every other department of human thought and activity, must change with the changing conditions of society, or it will fall in the rear of civilization and become an obstacle to improvement. Excerpt from The Principles of Teaching The book demands of students knowledge of the ele ments of psychology, particularly of dynamic psychology. The references entitled 'preparatory' (or their equivalent) will fulfill this prerequisite. These references are to the author's Elements of Psychology, which is in a sense an introduction to the present volume, but any standard course in psychology which gives due emphasis to the laws of mental connections will supply the preparation needed. Principles of Teaching (Classic Reprint) by Nathan A. Harvey Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Some men need to apologize for living, and the preface of a book is frequently in the nature of an apology for its existence. Whether a book needs an apology or not. it is sometimes advantageous to a reader to know the author's point of view, and what he expects the book to accomplish. Of the five hundred thousand teachers in the United States, about one hundred thousand are teaching their first term of school this year. Of this one hundred thousand, scarcely more than ten thousand have had any professional training, or have given to the subject of teaching any serious preliminary thought that could be called professional study. The professional aspect of the work must be presented to them after the work of teaching has been entered upon. In the hope that it may contribute somewhat to the realization that there is a professional aspect of teaching, and a body of educational doctrine worth while for a teacher to know, this volume is sent forth. The book has grown out of the attempt to give to young persons preparing to teach the largest amount of professional knowledge in the shortest possible time. This necessarily involves the selection of somewhat isolated topics, rather than a closely integrated body of educational doctrine. The Principles and Practice of Teaching and Class Management (Classic Reprint) by Joseph Landon Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Teaching and Class Management I have tried throughout to make the subject suggestive, and, while laying stress upon principles and essentials, to leave room for that originality of treatment by the teacher himself, and for that elasticity and expansiveness in practice, which characterise all good method. Mere unintelligent imitation of the detailed plans of others is not what is required in school work, and should not be the aim of any true teacher. One never knows how much one owes to one's friends and teachers, be they men or books. I am deeply indebted to both; but to acknowledge every point in detail would have been as impossible to me as it would have been weari some to the reader. It is with a lively sense of gratitude that I offer my thanks to those kind friends who have aided me in the revision of the proof sheets, and by their wise advice have enabled me to remove many defects. One, to whom I owe much for useful suggestions and friendly criticism, has passed away before the work was completed. The Teacher Taught by Emerson Davis Pdf

Excerpt from The Teacher Taught: Or the Principles and Modes of Teaching If the appearance of a new book were an uncommon event, there would be a propriety in giving to the public the history of its origin and progress. It would gratify curiosity, and might prove a stimulus to others to become authors. But at present there is no need of such a stimulant; and no one is curious to know what induced you to send forth a small volume, to be justled aside, and perhaps buried beneath a mouldering pile of ephemeral literature. In 1833, I published a small volume for the benefit of the Teachers of Common Schools in this vicinity, called 'The Teacher's Manual;' I aimed at nothing more than making teachers acquainted with the different and most approved methods of instructing children in the rudiments of knowledge. I have since found that teachers need to be taught principles as well as modes; I have therefore merged that book in this; and since the plan of this differs from that, and only a small portion of it is introduced into this, I have given it a new name. I have endeavored to enter the school-house with the teacher at the commencement of his school, to tell him how to arrange his school, how to manage the internal affairs of his little family, and how to instruct each class. Principles of Teaching, in Secondary Education (Classic Reprint) by Herbert H. Foster Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Teaching, in Secondary Education "The bane of high school science teaching is the notion that it must be taught differently from other subjects." These words, spoken to the author by a widely known science teacher, are in harmony with the statements of many prominent and successful teachers in other branches of high school study. Some years ago, having occasion to make a comparative study of all the available books on the teaching of secondary school subjects, the author was impressed by the striking parallel between the best of the books whenever method of instruction was treated. The chief differences were matters of omission, and the omissions in books in the same field were far from being the same. The only possible inference was that certain general principles of method are valid in all of the studies of the high school curriculum, and that the task of each teacher is not to construct his educational method regardless of these principles, but to adapt their application to his particular field. The present text is an attempt to assist the prospective or untrained teacher in a study of the principles upon which method in secondary instruction must be based. The book is a protest against formalism and mechanism, on the one hand, and unsystematic procedure on the other. The point of view is functional, in that in each step there is a procedure from discovery of aim to adaptation of process to aim. The author is also governed by the conviction that a well-planned lesson is more than a mere series of topics for study, but as a whole possesses an organic unity. Introduction to the Herbartian Principles of Teaching (Classic Reprint) by Catherine I. Dodd Pdf

Excerpt from Introduction to the Herbartian Principles of Teaching Our educational text-books, in the past, have ftc quently been full of practical details, but lacking in guiding principles. We are beginning to atone for our past neglect of educational theory, and to recognise that a study of principles and ideals of education is of greater import ance than a study of the external devices employed by the teacher to make the child acquire knowledge. The subject taught is secondary to the manner of teaching, and the question for the teacher is not, What does the child know but, What is his moral worth? Principles of Secondary Education (Classic Reprint) by Alexander James Inglis Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Secondary Education In the construction of a book on the principles of second ary education one of two methods may be employed. A number of specialists may collaborate in the production of a book which consists of several more or less isolated treatises on various separate phases of secondary education. Such a method has many merits, but precludes the develop ment of a consistently constructive theory. On the other hand, when a single individual attempts to write a book covering a field as broad as that of secondary education, there are always two possible dangers: either the limitations of the individual may lead to superficial treatment and error, or unsupported personal opinion and bias may dominate. The first of these dangers is minimized when the writer refrains from attempting to deal with the details of teach ing appropriate to the various studies of the secondary school program and confines this attention to more funda mental principles. In this book the author deals with special studies only in connection with the broader matters of aims and values, together with the larger elements of method necessarily involved. A later volume in this series will deal with the principles of teaching in the secondary school and several volumes will deal with methods of teaching special subjects or groups of subjects. Principles of Education (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Elmer Bolton Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Education The present work is the outgrowth of actual class-room experience in teaching the subject for two years in the State Normal School at Milwaukee and eight years in the State Uni versity of Iowa. Previous to this experience, many of the ideas here expressed had been gradually shaping themselves while the author was teaching and supervising in public schools. All of the material has been carefully tested in junior and senior university classes, and much of it in advanced normal school classes. Portions of several chapters have been given many times in teachers' institutes and associations. The distinct aim, however, has been to produce a text-book of college grade for beginners in the study of educational science. The Science and Art of Teaching by George Victor Le Vaux Pdf

Excerpt from The Science and Art of Teaching: Or, the Principles and Practice of Education Our design in preparing the following work was to furnish Student-Teachers, and others engaged in education, with a Manual containing a comprehensive resume, within a moderate compass, of all the more important principles and details of their Profession. In the execution of this task we have endeavoured to combine brevity with clearness, so that our mode of expression might be as simple and direct as was consistent with the nature of the subject. Several of the succeeding chapters have appeared from time to time in the English and Irish Educational Papers, some in the American Educational Monthly, and some in the Ontario Journal of Education. Those published in the old country, having secured the kind commendations of the London press, were reproduced in the Journal of Education for the Province of Victoria (Australia) and received with much favour by our fellow-labourers in the antipodes. These chapters (with others which appear in print for the first time) are now presented in book form, with the hope that they may to some extent fill a place, hitherto void, in our native educational literature, and thereby help to promote the interests of the young by reflecting mental light and youthful happiness into some of the darker and less attractive shades of the school-room. In years to come we hope to see the prejudices and moral weaknesses of present educational systems supplanted by the reign of light, love, and intelligence; so that children, at home and abroad, may be emancipated from the thraldom of fear, and educated according to the teachings of Nature and the laws of their being. Principles of Class Teaching (Classic Reprint) by J. J. Findlay Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Class Teaching It may be questioned whether any of the members of that Association who met at Glasgow last August, recollected the fortunes of the Society for the Development of the Science of Education, which, under its later title of the Education Society, brought together some eminent. Thinkers, as well as a few practical teachers. Its President in 1879, Alex ander Bain, propounded the question, Is there a Science of Education? And his book, published about the same time, gave an answer, which, while accepted by many thinkers of that time, has never met with the approval of the teaching profession. It would be going beyond' the scope of a preface to deal with Bain's position (his views on one or two vital matters are referred to in the first chapter) but it is worth while to try and clear, the air as to the standpoint from which the study of Education may be regarded.
