This book is not an intellectual history or popular summary of recent work on consciousness in humans. Bernard Baars (1988), Edelman and Tononi (2000), and many others, have written such, and done it well indeed. This book, rather, brings the powerful analytic machinery of communication theory to bear on the Global Neuronal Workspace (GNW) model of consciousness which Baars introduced, and does so in a formal mathematical manner. It is not the first such attempt. The philospher Fred Dretske (1981), indep- dent of Baars, long ago outlined how information theory might illuminate the understanding of mind. Adapting his approach on the necessary conditions for mental process, we apply a previously-developed information theory analysis of interacting cognitive biological and social modules to Baars' GNW, which has become the principal candidate for a 'standard model' of consciousness. Invoking an obvious canonical homology with statistical physics, the method, when iterated in the spirit of the Hierarchical Linear Model of regression theory, generates a fluctuating dynamic threshold for consciousness which is similar to a tunable phase transition in a physical system. The phenomenon is, however, constrained to a manifold/atlas structure analogous to a retina; an adaptable Rate Distortion manifold, whose 'topology', in a large sense, reflects the hierarchy of embedding constraints acting on consciousness. This view greatly extends what Baars has characterized as 'contexts.

The rewarding properties of drugs depend on their capacity to activate appetitive motivational states. Because the mechanisms underlying natural reward are an important life-sustaining process and strongly conserved throughout metazoan evolution, invertebrate models provide a powerful complement to the mammalian systems traditionally used in addiction research. A wide range of organizational complexity, combined with genetically manipulable, and relatively simple, accessible nervous systems, make invertebrates excellent models in which to explore general addiction principles. These include the role of natural reward systems in learning, the basic biological mechanisms of drug addiction, and the long-term effects of early drug exposure. The contributions to this e-book illustrate the current state of invertebrate addiction research. The chapters show that the reward circuits of invertebrate taxa are surprisingly sensitive to human drugs of abuse. Employing learning paradigms typically used in vertebrate studies (viz., conditioned place preference and operant, self-administration paradigms), invertebrates are shown to exhibit aspects of the addiction cycle from activational effects of common psychostimulants, sensitization with repeated application, to extinction, withdrawal, and reinstatement. This highlights the value of the comparative approach for both exploring conserved mechanisms underlying drug addiction and the utility of invertebrate models in seeking potential solutions.

This is a highly original book about the connections between historical moment, social structure, technology, communication systems, and what is said and thought using these systems - notably literature. The author focuses on the differences between 'discourse networks' in 1800 and in 1900, in the process developing a new analysis of the shift from romanticism to modernism. The work might be classified as a German equivalent to the New Historicism that is currently of great interest among American literary scholars, both in the intellectual influences to which Kittler responds and in his concern to ground literature in the most concrete details of historical reality. The artful structure of the book begins with Goethe's Faust and ends with Vale;ry's Faust. In the 1800 section, the author discusses how language was learned, the emergence of the modern university, the associated beginning of the interpretation of contemporary literature, and the canonization of literature. Among the writers and works Kittler analyzes in addition to Goethe's Faust are Schlegel, Hegel, E. T. A. Hoffman's 'The Golden Pot', and Goethe's Tasso. The 1900 section argues that the new discourse network in which literature is situated in the modern period is characterized by new technological media - film, the photograph, and the typewritten page - and the crisis that these caused for literary production. Along the way, the author discusses the work of Nietzsche, Gertrude Stein, Mallarme;, Bram Stroker, the Surrealists, Rilke, Kafka, and Freud, among others.
